Embracing My Lifelong Passion for Gaming: A Journey of Discovery and Personal Growth

I’ve been an underground gamer for a long time, with my love for gaming starting with the Vectrex system, which had only one game programmed into it: Asteroids. This gaming system belonged to a family member at the time, not me. Later, my mom bought me my first gaming system for Christmas, a Nintendo that came with Mario Brothers, and I was instantly captivated.

The beginning of my gaming experience.

My fascination with gaming lies in the virtual worlds created in digital space. My journey has taken me through various gaming realms, from Mario Brothers, Tecmo Bowl, Sonic the Hedgehog, and Ninja Gaiden to Resident Evil, Tomb Raider, Fable, Halo, and now Destiny. Gaming has always had a special place in my life since childhood. However, I never made the leap to becoming a programmer, game developer, or a gaming streamer. My life has seemingly pulled me in numerous directions, leaving little time to fully explore this secret passion of mine.

Despite a busy life, gaming has always been a source of relief for me. Today, I find myself playing games like Destiny 2 Lightfall, Call of Duty, Apex, Fortnite, and Gears of War. I’m particularly drawn to the Halo and Destiny series by Bungie, a company I’ve followed for quite some time. Their engaging narratives and immersive digital spaces have always been my main interest.

My admiration for Bungie goes beyond just their game design. From the outside, I don’t have any knowledge of how Bungie works internally, but from afar, it seems that Bungie is attempting to model a democratic approach to game development through open conversation and community forums. Bungie has continued to try building a game for the players’ community, with the developers’ support. Even with how huge the gaming industry is today, Bungie still seems to support gamers’ feedback and works hard at including gamers across the developmental process to help better craft the gaming experience.

This dedication to player involvement and community engagement resonates with my own experiences and interests. As a game developer, Bungie has consistently explored themes of light and darkness, both within individuals and their environments. These narratives parallel my own work in education, community service, and activism, where I have been confronted with the challenge of using my position, powers, and privileges to support those in need.

In games like Halo and Destiny, players are faced with similar dilemmas: how to use their powers to protect and advocate for the vulnerable. This correlation between my work and Bungie’s gaming worlds has always been incredibly appealing to me. It has helped me reflect on my own journey to investigate the light and darkness within myself and model how I have learned to manage this balance in my life.

As I look back on my accomplishments in education, community service, activism, and sports, I’ve realized that gaming has remained a constant throughout my life. I am now at a crossroads, wondering if game streaming could be my next adventure. However, before I can fully commit to this exciting new endeavor, I have several projects I must complete.

Currently, I am working on finishing my second documentary about my trauma work and management practices, my personal biography book, seven children’s books, an online course that’s a result of the work I’ve developed throughout my career, and updating my professional website, AnthonyKelleySpeaks.com. It’s crucial for me to complete these projects before I can mentally and emotionally embark on my gaming journey.

Once these tasks are done, I’m eager to give my love for gaming the attention it truly deserves. With so many platforms now supporting game streaming, it seems much more realistic for me to consider taking this step. Despite all that I’ve done, it’s amusing to think that this new chapter in my life is the most exhilarating.

My journey with Bungie and the worlds they’ve created has not only provided me with a creative outlet but has also allowed me to draw parallels between my professional life and the themes explored within their games. As I venture into this new chapter, I aim to channel the same passion, dedication, and commitment to my craft that Bungie has consistently demonstrated in their game development process.

In conclusion, my story is not just about gaming or the internal conflicts we face in our lives. It’s a testament to the power of passion and the potential for personal growth when we allow ourselves to explore our interests fully. As I embark on this new adventure, I’m excited to merge my love for gaming with my work in education, community service, and activism, and create a lasting impact within the gaming community and beyond.
