Student Athletes & Higher Education

Below I came across two great readings on the challenges universities face in developing their student athletes. These two reading were very interesting to me because they both hit close to home, being a formal athlete at the University of Washington from 1998 to 2003, I had moments of reflection that allowed me to closely look at my experience as a division one athlete. The first article “The Shame of College Sports” provided a great over view of the history and foundation of the NCAA. Considering the hot topics coming to surface in resent news around athletes getting paid to academic challenges and leadership issues, this article paints a clear picture of why and where a lot of these issues stem from. Please take some time and read this article.

The Second reading- “Scoreboard, Baby: A story of College Football”, gives a intimate look at the University of Washington 2000 rose bowl championship team. The specific reading was of interest to me due to the fact that I was on that team and had a pretty interesting experience, chapter four was specifically dedicated to me and telling my story of what college life was. Great read, please take some time and check these resources out.
